Benchmarking is the process of measuring your building’s energy and water consumption and comparing it against past performance and to other similar buildings. Building owners and operators commonly use ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager®, a free interactive software platform, to conduct benchmarking.

Assembly Bill 802

Assembly Bill (AB) 802, which Governor Brown signed into law in October 2015, establishes a California statewide program for benchmarking and publicly disclosing building energy use for commercial, multifamily and mixed-use buildings over 50,000 square feet.

Commercial buildings started reporting in June 2018. Multifamily and mixed-use buildings must report starting June 2019. Public disclosure starts one year after reporting begins.
